At Summit Preparatory School our goal is to serve the highest quality foods with special attention to nutritional content and special diet restrictions so our students can learn to make healthy lifestyle choices with regard to what they eat. Our state of the art kitchen was designed specifically for student participation and instruction. The opportunity to help in the kitchen is available to students once they reach an appropriate level of responsibility, accomplishment and maturity. Availability is one to two students per semester to make the most of individual talents and special interests. Proper table etiquette, service, and manners will be addressed, as well and cleanliness, food safety, and illness prevention.
Breakfast is self-served in the dorms before students gather for morning meeting at the lounge of the main hall. Lunch and dinner are served cafeteria style along with an extensive fresh salad bar. Students eat with the students and staff on their teams. Residential Counselors monitor food intake quality and quantity, table manners, social skills, and manage dessert privileges accordingly.
Dish duties are assigned to one team each week. They are responsible for scraping, washing, and putting away dishes and cookware as well as cleaning and sanitizing all working and eating surfaces. Teachers and Residential Counselors monitor student participation and the overall teamwork of the students as they do their assigned duties for each clean. This experience allows for a variety of learning experiences associated with leadership, responsibility, and cooperation.
Like everything else at Summit Preparatory School, the expectations placed upon the students with regard to meals are designed not only to meet their immediate needs, but also allow them to develop other skills necessary for leading productive and fulfilling lives.
